There are some guys you just don’t want to see sitting opposite of you in the lanes when eliminations begin, and in X275, Ron Rhodes is one of those guys. Rhodes recently took his X275 machine to Door Wars at Maryland International Raceway where he went all the way to the finals and reset the nitrous small block record for X275.
Rhodes owns Rhodes Custom Auto with his father, Larry, where they pump out some killer chassis work and other hot rods. The Camaro Rhodes pilots has been in his possession for over 30 years and was the first car that he drove. Currently the car has a BES 460-inch small block with 23-degree AllPro Heads between the fenders. Feeding the monstrous mill its giggle juice is a very trick Induction Solutions single fogger with Water Injection. Keeping all that nitrous flowing right is an NLR NOS controller and Spaghetti Menders wiring. A Hutches Powerglide and PTC bolt together converter transfer the power down to the TRZ suspension, Calvert springs and traction bars while Santhuff shocks keep everything planted.
When you mix all of these great parts with Rhodes’ chassis knowledge you get some killer performances. In 2013 Rhodes was the big man on the block when it came to mall block nitrous in X275, as he routinely had the quickest fastest car with the quickest short times. In 2014, Rhodes now has both ends of the record with his 4.52 blast at over 154 mph. When asked if there’s any left in it Rhodes said, “If the conditions are right I think there is a little bit left. The .52 pass the car only had a 1.08 60’ and it has been a 1.05.” This record didn’t come easy by any stretch for Rhodes, but he commented, “this really shows you can work hard and make any combo work.”
Rhodes plans on racing at The Yellowbullet nationals, Donald Long’s fall race, Holly Springs, and in a Dragzine exclusive, has confirmed he will be going to the Shakedown At The Summit in Norwalk later this year, as well.
Ron Rhodes is a total throwback grass roots racer who works hard to earn what he’s accomplished. But don’t let his humble nature fool you — he’s one bad man on a set of radials and loves to compete with anybody.
