Can cars be art? We think that answer has been definitively answered with a resounding yes, as the automobile has become inseparable from Americana. But what about fine art? Or gemstones? Automotive inspiration can be harder to find in the kinds of art that people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for, but if you look hard enough, you’ll certainly find it.
Hemmings Auto Blog has the story of this unique ruby dragster based on the famous drag car of Greer, Black and Prudhomme — three big names in the drag racing world. Incredibly, this work of drag racing art is expected to fetch up to $200,000 when it goes to auction in April.
With that kind of money you could buy a real dragster, but it wouldn’t be made from ruby, gold, or obsidian, would it? Nope, but this one is. Artist Quispe Aparici designed and crafted this work of art, using cut ruby panels, obsidian for the tires, rock crystal for the windshield, and gold vermeil for the engine components.
The result is an absurdly well-crafted work of art that is expected to sell for between $150,000 and $200,000 at Bonham’s Gems, Minerals, and Lapidary Works of Art sale in Los Angeles on April 16th. Sure, it isn’t the real deal dragster, which is owned Bruce Meyer, but it is still a very cool mantle piece. You know, if you’re into model gem dragsters.
