Sikora Goes into 2010 as a Four Time Outlaw Champion

West Coast Outlaw racer Doug Sikora will race in the 2010 racing season as a four time Outlaw Champion and record holder with excellent prospects for success. This past November, he victoriously reclaimed his Outlaw Champion status in his 2003 Mustang at the PSCA’s Edelbrock World Finals at the Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California. It’s been a long five years since Sikora led the Outlaw class running back to back Championships for three years straight with the Pacific Street Car Association (PSCA) from 2001- 2003. As if to say “I’m Back”, Sikora and Crew Chief Jason Pettis also set a new ET record of 6.715 at the event sending a serious competition message to the class for the 2010 season.

At the start of 2009, Sikora and his 10 year Veteran Crew Chief Pettis made a leap from their old trusted nitrous combination to a 400 cubic inch engine and Pro Charger with BS3 EFI. Sikora and the team felt a change was necessary to meet the challenges of the faster growing class. Knowing any change is a struggle, the team brought in experts Joe Spetter of Turbo People and Jim Summers from Procharger, which obviously paid off in full. The first weekend out with the new set up yielded a spectacular pass just into the 6 second range at 205 mph. It would be the start of the ET and MPH needed to run top of the pack again. While the 2009 year presented a huge learning curve, Sikora and Pettis have made amazing gains considering a new and unfamiliar set up running a best of 6.67 and 210 mph.

I spoke with Sikora about how the Outlaw class has advanced over the years. It was not too long ago really that many West Coast Outlaw competitors ran in the eight second range. Only a few top fast cars dipped into the seven’s. So what has changed? Today’s competitive Outlaw car has crossed over running Pro Street times in the sixes. Sikora said it’s now that Outlaw cars are running Pro Street horse power. “Last year we had about 1300 hp in the Mustang. This year we have upped that by a 1000 to produce around 2300 hp”. While Sikora’s Mustang is a true Outlaw back half car weighing in at 2750 lbs, the difference for Outlaw competitors is really the challenge of the smaller 10.5w tire as compared to Pro Street racers who are allowed a large tire. Sikora said, “we have had to make adjustments in our power to get the car off the line”. He also attributes success to his Mickey Thompson tires which he believes are the most superior tire on the market for Outlaw competition. Sikora has opted to run a Mike’s Transmission Monster power glide with a Neil Chance converter. This type of set up is proving successful in Turbo type applications pushing Pro Street Competitors into the 6.20’s. Sikora hopes to run consistently in the 6.60 range and it looks like it’s certainly probable.

Sikora was first introduced to racing by his father at the age of ten. He recalls that his father brought home an old Duster and 440 engine for a father and son project. He said, “racing has been fun from the start although I never dreamed that it would progress into what it is for me today. It wouldn’t have been possible without my father. I have also learned the importance and value of good friends” Friend and supporter Bob Remillard has been behind Sikora from the start helping with making the team a success. Sikora’s Crew Chief Jason Pettis takes care of all the machine work and has been with the team for 10 years.
