In a report published last month regarding the new Flowmaster NMCA West Series schedule and classes, a brief mention was made that discussions were underway between Promedia, the NHRA, and Los Angeles county officials in an effort to bring grass roots racing back to the fabled Auto Club Raceway at Pomona this season with a date on the NMCA West schedule.
Following those initial rumblings, we’re hearing that this deal between Promedia and the NHRA (who owns the track but not the surrounding LA County Fairgrounds) is all but a done deal for this season and will be added as the fourth event on the inaugural NMCA West schedule; most likely in the current TBD date of August 17-19.
The Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, located deep in the heart of the Los Angeles metro area in southern California, has been severely hampered over the last decade by increasing demands on noise levels, supposed pollution concerns, and the all around annoyance of area residents and businesses that moved in long after the track was there. Today, the NHRA Winternationals and Auto Club Finals are the only drag racing events contested there annually. Its only other allowable use throughout the year is for the filming of Hollywood movie scenes and television commercials.
If this unprecedented deal plays out – and we’re pretty certain that it will – the NMCA West event would mark the first non-NHRA national event to be contested at Pomona since the Super Chevy Show visited there in 2007.
This blockbuster news follows last weeks announcement that the NMCA West opener would move to the Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.,marking the first time that a Promedia event has been contested at the iconic facility.
Look for an official announcement regarding the Pomona event to be made in the early to middle part of this week.
