Street Outlaws television star Derek Travis was uninjured on Saturday evening after a high-speed accident in his familiar “Silver Unit” Camaro at the I-22 Motorsports Park in Alabama. Travis was competing in the Fat Tire Shootout at the strip in the town of Eldridge and was lined up alongside the Corvette of Hunter Burgess when he lost control of the car beyond half track and struck the right lane guardrail.
Travis was able to climb from the car and quickly assess the damage, which, as video and photos from the track have illustrated, was quite extensive — the composite front end destroyed, the outer fiberglass door shell ripped away, the quarter panels crinkled, the strut and front wheel sheered off, among other things.
The accident is particularly heartbreaking for Travis and for his fans, as he’d only just completed a bumper-to-bumper overhaul of the car made famous on the Discovery Channel, having beefed up the entire chassis, made copious use of composite to reduce weight, altered the entire stance of the car, and other odds and ends to prepare it to take on the new breed of street-raced cars out there. In addition, the big-block powerplant had been punched out some 100 additional cubic inches and and an extra stage of nitrous oxide added.
Travis and his team are still assessing the damage, and while we certainly hope this incident doesn’t spell the demise of the Silver Unit, there’s no doubt that a racer as driven as Derek will be back behind the wheel of something soon enough.
