Top 2009 rookie Massey will make season debut in Houston

Press Release from NHRA:

Spencer Massey, last year’s top NHRA rookie as winner of the Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award, will make his 2010 Full Throttle debut this weekend at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park in the seat of Mitch King’s Top Fueler.

Massey, who scored two Top Fuel victories and finished sixth in Don Prudhomme’s dragster in his debut season, had his potential-laden Full Throttle Series future interrupted when Prudhomme was unable to secure enough backing to compete this season. In the interim, Massey has been competing in King’s car on the IHRA circuit but attending every NHRA event to network and search for partners for his return to NHRA competition.

“I’ve been keeping my ears open and talking to everyone I can,” he said. “I have some irons in the fire, but nothing’s set in stone and jumping out at me right now. This will be a good chance to get my face back out there, plus Mitch is from Galveston, so it’s kind of a home-track race for him. It’s a Paul Smith tune-up, so it’s always able and competitive, but we’ve been looking to test some new stuff anyway, and it will be nice to do it on a good racetrack like Houston and maybe go a round or two.”

Asked if there was a possibility that the team would race other NHRA events in the future, Massey replied, “We haven’t talked about that, but I know Paul Smith and Mitch, and they both love to race, especially when the car is running well, and if someone were to help us out financially, there’s always the chance.

“Obviously, my goal is to be back racing on the Full Throttle circuit,” he said, “and it’ll be nice to be at the races and not be just pacing around the track.”
