If you’re looking to make a lot of power…and we mean a LOT of power, you’re going to need some forced induction. While the debate of superchargers versus turbochargers will not be settled on our humble corner of the Internet, it cannot be denied that strapping two huge turbos to a beefy V8 engine is sure to produce some ridiculous horsepower numbers.
Nobody knows this better than Nelson Racing Engines, who in the past have provided us with some awesome videos of their high-horsepower motors. And while we’ve seen plenty of old school motors rocking power in excess of 1,000 ponies, this 454 LSx engine tickles us pink with its redonkulous 1,800 horsepower.
Yes, 1,800 horsepower. According to Tom Nelson, chieftain of Nelson Racing Engines, the LSx 455 engine makes “insane power” per pound of boost. This is their “hot rod” series engine, meant to be dropped into a car that is equally at home on the street as it is on the strip. And man, does this engine sound mean.
With an air-to-water intercooler, a custom-fabricated intake, and lots of top-notch engine parts, this engine makes 1,000 pound-feet of torque at 3,400 RPM. Peak horsepower is 1,300 ponies on pump gas, and up to 1,800 horsepower on higher octane race fuel. What really amazes us though is how civilized this beastly motor sounds at idle. You’d never guess there was almost 2,000 horsepower waiting to be unleashed. Best of all, NRE has even more plans for the awesome LSx series of engines down the line. Make sure you watch the whole video for some really delicious sound bites of this monster motor in action (and a fiery surprise at the end.)
