The era of drag racing is put into perspective by a local news team from the Atco area featuring the legendary voice of Tom Brookshier. Brookshier was part of the TV10 news crew and put this documentary together about the cars and the teams that filled their lives with the drag racing fever. The sport featured many of the areas youth as they filled their need for speed during an era when young men and women often fit the persona of being wild and unruly racers on the streets. An image that’s hard to wipe from the minds of the public was put into perspective by this great documentary.
Atco Raceway, which is still in operation today, is one of the oldest drag strips on the east coast and has seen some truly legendary races in its time. With the likes of “Big Daddy” Don Garlits part of match races and exhibition events, it created a huge draw of spectators. At one point you will even catch a glimpse of a very young Bob Frey doing his thing behind the mic. Frey is a native of the New Jersey area and has become one of the iconic voices of the NHRA nationals events and ESPN broadcasts.
