Video: 940 Horsepower Whipple’d Steve Morris LS

Steve Morris Engines is known for rolling out high-horsepower engines that boggle the senses. Combinations that manage to capture the worlds attention, and still manage to be as reliable as they are potent. Following the success of the LS-Free engine build, which cranked out a respectable 1,060 hp on 16 lbs of boost, Morris decided to roll the stout LS platform into his next venture. His newest engine build was designed to showcase the longevity and performance capabilities of a supercharged LS motor. This particular build ensures that the end user has room to grow if they so desire.

Kylo Renn 2

Kylo Renn makes a jaw-dropping 1,000 hp, with a 2.9 liter Whipple supercharger, on the engine dyno when race gas is pumped trough its veins.

“The ultimate goal of this build was to have an engine with very docile street manners, but would still be able to make a brutal amount of torque down low,” said Alex Esnaola at Steve Morris Engines. “The marriage between the Whipple supercharger and the LS platform complemented each other nicely while delivering the result we were looking for.”

According to Esnaola, this engine dubbed “Kylo Renn” (any Star Wars buff can attest that this name is a perfect fit because they’re both dressed in all black and extremely whiney) could quickly be coaxed to produce 1,300 to 1,400 hp with a dew modifications.

Foretelling the possibility of a future bump in horsepower a Chevrolet Performance LSX block was chosen to be the backbone of this build. While a set of Steve Morris custom-ported Dart Pro1 LS3 cylinder heads provided a superior amount of intake and exhaust flow. The combination of both of these pieces allow for improved cylinder head gasket sealing — achieved thanks to an improved head bolt design that incorporates two additional bolts around each cylinder bore.

Dyno shot 1Esnaola also went on to describe that previous engine builds have led them to refine their components selection for each individual application. Despite having a Whipple 2.9 supercharger providing the boost, instead of a Bullseye Power street 80 mm billet turbocharger, this setup is nearly identical to the previously stated LS-Free build.

“There is no shortage of volume engine builders out there that are offering much larger displacement engines that really don’t compete with the numbers we’re managing to get out of our builds, like this little 376 ci LS,” explained Esnaola. “This combination of parts can bring any old-school muscle into today’s standards of current EFI technology.”

Working in conjunction with the Holley EFI, this engine is pumping out a remarkable 939 hp and 834 lb-ft of torque on 93 octane pump gas with the option of running race gas to break into the four figures.

Whether you’re looking for a hopped up street car engine or an all out racing engine, you can rest assured that Steve Morris Engines can line out a build that will satisfy your high horsepower needs.
