The glass ceiling for engine horsepower was long ago shattered, and today if you’ve got the funding and the skills, 1,000 horsepower is easily attainable. While some people might say 1,000 horsepower is enough, for those who pursue the career of racing, they know that there is no such thing as too much horsepower. The more, the faster, the better.
Leave it to Nelson Racing Engines [1] to keep cranking out the ridiculously powerful motors that have helped them make a name in the motorsports biz. One of their latest creations is a 1,500 horsepower small-block Ford boasting two turbos, a custom intake, and more torque than should be legally allowed.
We’d tell you to crank the volume, but honestly, this engine is so loud that we urge you to resist making it too loud. The stroked-out small-block Windsor engine displaces 428 cubic-inches, the same as some of Ford’s old big-block engines. But this motor done by NRE is exponentially more powerful thanks to the “mirror image” turbocharger setup and alien intake manifold.

This isn’t just a powerful engine though; it is pretty and drivable too, thanks to adjustable boost levels. Plus, the engine is designed to fit into some tighter engine bays, like those found on the early Ford Mustang. While we’re not sure we’d want to drive a car with nearly 1,400 ft-lbs of torque on tap to the grocery store, it’s nice to know the option is there.
So the hell with it; turn up the volume, and listen to this shiny engine sing. You won’t regret it.
