Over the years we’ve all seen numerous wild projects, unique cars and themes that grab our attention. As impressive as drag racing is, it’s always nice that people have fast intentions on land, sea, or in the air.
The “Killa Gorilla” seen in the video above, while run in the sand rather than pavement and much shorter distances, is a creation very similar to the incredibly fast, traditional drag racing vehicles that we all know and love. When this sand racer is staged, by the sound alone, you’d think Mike Murillo was bringing his Outlaw 10.5 car up on the two-step.
This monstrous mud rail rides on a set of enormous Goodyear paddled tires wrapped around a set of Weld Racing beadlock wheels, and is powered by an equally monstrous power plant: a fuel injected, big block Ford punched out to 673 cubic inches. To most of us, on the mud, that would be more than enough to feed our adrenaline rush. However, this sand racer added twin precision 94mm turbo’s into the equation. An estimated 3,800 horsepower is delivered to all four tires in the four-wheel drive configuration. If you look closely, you can see the ingenious outboard gear casing and driveshaft that’s routed the only place that it can be – along the outside of the chassis to the front housing to operate the four-wheel drive configuration.
The craftsmanship of this engine combination is a real work of art, with stainless headers feeding exhaust air into the turbos. The attention to detail is extremely present in the aluminum work, as well. The exhaust exiting the turbos is run parallel to the dump tubes for the waste gates, which helps with those impressive flames we see during night time racing.
The “Killa Gorilla” gets down the 200 foot course in less than 2.5 seconds, with the Dana 30 front end in the air the entire length of the track.
This racer had a unique vision, and we dig that. He took an idea and made it a reality and the outcome is what you see in the video: 3,800 horsepower literally ripping apart the ground that we stand on.
