Lots of people get into drag racing using a standard formula of a standard rear wheel drive, full-bodied production or production-based vehicle. If you want to go class racing in the NHRA, the formula begins to change. But then there are those who choose to walk outside the norm and build something unique.
[1]“Different” is what makes drag racing such an intriguing sport, and Australia’s own Greentree family takes racing something different to a whole new level, by campaigning a Pro Modified Hearse that goes by the name of the “Outlaw Undertaker” and lays down some impressive numbers at the track.
The “Outlaw Undertaker” campaigned by the Greentree’s, is based on a Holden VN Commodore Hearse. Like many cars in the United States, the Commodore had many variations built on its platform. Over its production run the Commodore had variations that included four door sedans and wagons. The Commodore also saw action in law enforcement with a police package. With additional massaging, Holden was able to produce the Commodore Hearse, fit for carrying individuals on their final rides.
So, how do you turn a big old hearse into a six-second Pro Modified race car, you ask? You start with a 500 cubic inch TFX billet engine stuffed with plety of top shelf parts that can handle big boost. Supplying the boost for the hearse is a 16-71 supercharger being fed fuel from Kunt injection and blower hat. Getting all of the power to the ground is a 10.5-inch Crowerglide clutch and a three-speed Lenco transmission. This combo has pushed the Outlaw Undertaker to a best elapsed time of 6.87-seconds at a speed over 200 MPH. That’s certainly moving out for a full-bodied hearse of this size.
