Video: AMP C7 Corvette First To Go 8s, Does It On Stock Components

When the new C7 Z06 first hit the streets, people were—and still are—astonished by its performance. It was the first ‘Vette to ever be capable of a 10-second quarter mile right off the show room floor. And soon, people were pushing them deep into the 10s with just a set of drag radials and a driver mod. And while all of that is very impressive, many began to wonder just how far the platform could go. Well, the guys over at Advanced Modern Performance (AMP) have just given us the best response to date, running an 8.983 at 151.78 mph in the quarter mile, shattering the previous low-9 second record for a C7Z.

How did they do it you ask? On a stock transmission, stock torque converter, stock style suspension, stock transmission, and stock bottom end is how. But you probably want to know more of the details than that. The Shark Grey Metallic Corvette is equipped with one of AMP’s “Stage 5X” packages–and then some. This entails the addition of an F1X ProCharger along with a cavalcade of supporting mods. But perhaps just as important as the go-fast recipe used, the car had to start with good bones.

“When we first started out, I wanted the car to be as light as possible,” said Sam Miller, co-owner and founder of Advanced Modern Performance. “So we looked around for a base 1LZ and found one in Miami that was an auto car and purchased it from there.”

Miller said that from the jump, the goal was to go faster than any other C7 had ever been before. And for the team at AMP, it meant making sure the record they set would stand for as long as possible–or at least until they could beat it again themselves. It was decided that they wouldn’t stop until the car had laid down at least an 8-second pass.

To achieve that goal, AMP started with the addition of a ProCharger. The original TVS R1740 huffer was ditch in favor of the sheet metal intake that accompanies the centrifugal snail. Custom charge pipes, air inlet and race filter were then fitted to the system. A ProCharger Red Race Valve is used to vent compressed atmosphere when the throttle blade slams shut.

AMP then ported the stock set of LT4 heads and stuffed them with heavy duty stainless exhaust valves and bronze valve guides. A custom Comp Cams camshaft, spec’d by Brian Tooley himself and ground to propriety AMP specifications, tickles the valves and features an enlarged fuel lobe which retains the variable valve timing and increases fuel delivery by 33 percent. Dual valve springs, good for .675-inches of lift were used and are kept in line by titanium retainers. Johnson Short Travel lifters with LS2 lifter trays were used to keep the valve train in check.

ARP head studs were added to ensure that mill was capable of handling the increased boost levels—which is especially important when considering the compression ratio of a stock LT4 is already 10.0:1. American Racing 2-inch primary headers, breathing through an off-road X pipe vent spent gases while an Alkycontrol dual nozzle meth kit keeps the incoming air charge crisp and allows for more timing to be thrown at the bullet. The fuel system has been modified with an external fuel pump to ensure the injection pump is alway flush with fresh octane.

Weld Alumastar wheels, wrapped in Mickey Thompson drag radials, help channel all that grunt to the ground.

All tuning duties were handled in house and AMP ensures that each C7Z that rolls out of its doors equipped with the 5X package is at least making 550 rwhp—which seems like an understatement when you consider AMP’s car easily more than doubles that number, laying down an impressive 1,220 ponies.

“We went a little further with this car, this starts out around the same build as our 5X package but it ends up more like a 6X package,” Miller said. “There are somethings done to this that are more aggressive than we typically do on customers cars, since it would be a pain to live with on the street.”

For example, lightweight Technocraft seats–which Miller tells us are comfortable for race seat, but not so much for long distance trips–replaced the stockers and help shave 82 pounds off the car’s weight. And while the build might be slightly more aggressive than their usual offerings, you would be amazed at how many stock components this 8-second car uses.

According to Miller, “the short block, the trans, and the rear end have never been out of the car. The rear upper and lower control arms have been modified but other than that, it has the factory shocks, axles, everything.” The rear brakes have been converted with a 15-inch wheel kit from LG, along with the Carlyle brake calipers to allow for a better bite from the Mickey Thompsons. Pretty amazing when you consider the car cut a 1.436-second 60 foot time on its way to breaking the record.

Earlier shake down runs resulted in passes ranging anywhere from 9.60s to 9.20s. But on the final attempt of the day, Bryan Pomeroy, the other half of Advanced Modern Performance, took his time and blasted off the line and into the history books.

“We call it a racecar but it is every bit a street car too,” Miller said. “After we got it back from the track, I drove it Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, putting at least 400 miles on the car and it did it no problem.”

Congratulations to the team over at AMP. We’re sure this isn’t the last we’ve seen of this C7 and we will keep you posted on any other records it happens to smash.
