To have enough horsepower to pull wheelies in your car is definitely something to brag about. With wheel-lifting horsepower, the car must be set up to take the stress of popping wheelies.
The driver must also know how to handle the car when it’s functioning properly and when things go wrong. Kevin Maurer, creater of the Nitro Art Video, has compiled some of the best and worst wheelie launches of 2010 in their video Best of Wild Rides 2010.
The 12-minute preview video shows race after race of cars pulling wheelies. Some of these races are done with only one car and others are done with two. Some of the races show properly set up cars and drivers that know what they’re doing.
However, most of the footage is of races gone wrong. Cars can be seen bouncing up into wheelies all the way down the track, careening into the other lane, hitting the wall at high speeds and sliding out of control in the video. There is even footage of a motorcyclist popping a wheelie so high that the bike drives right out from underneath him.
If you don’t want to watch the entire 12-minute video, be sure to catch the footage of the Mustang crashing into the wall right at a camera man just after the one-minute mark. You also won’t want to miss the Mustang popping a wheelie half way down the track and flipping his car end over end as the wind resistance becomes too much just after 7 minutes in. If you just can’t get enough of the crazy wheelie action, you can purchase a two hour DVD dedicated to wheelie and drag racing mishaps.
