Video: Bruce Mullins, Dwayne Wolfe Go For WILD Rides At Door Wars!

bm

Along with being one of the most experienced wheelmen out there, longtime northeast drag racer Bruce Mullins is among the finest custom painters in the business — both talents for which he relied on over the weekend and will need to utilize to get back on the race track after a wild ride at the Maryland Intentional Raceway’s Door Wars event over the weekend.

During qualifying for the Pro Mod category on Saturday, Mullins, at the controls of his gorgeous supercharged 1963 split-window Corvette, appears to have encountered mechanical troubles just off the starting line on this particular run that spilled fluid under the left rear slick — unbeknownst to Mullins at the time — that sent him careening out of control. Fortunately, Mullins was quick to react when the car finally pitched to the left toward the wall, as he stepped off the accelerator and pancaked the guardrail (scarring up the show-quality paint job applied by his Paint by Bruce Mullins shop in Virginia) rather than taking it more head-on.

The ride wasn’t over then, though. The impact and the likely presence of fluid under the tires sent Mullins into a butt-puckering, wheel-sawing ride as he fought to get the Corvette under control — climbing up on two wheels and nearly turning over onto its roof twice before he was finally able to tame it and actually take the short turnoff as though nothing had happened at all.

Fortunately, other than perhaps a soiled driving suit, a scratched race car, and some heart attacks for his crew back at the starting line, Mullins escaped unscathed from what could’ve been a far worse incident.

Ironically enough, veteran Pro Modified racer Dwayne Wolfe was in the line opposite of Mullins on his fateful run, and later, he too got a ride that was far more than he bargained for in a pass that was an almost carbon copy of the one Mullins took.

The Moorfield, West Virginia native, driving his blown 1968 Camaro, lost traction and took an abrupt turn just before the eighth-mile in the same lane Mullins had been in, hooking toward the guardrail. While you certainly couldn’t have put an eyelash between his quarter panel and the wall, from the vantage point of TheRacingVids camera, Wolfe never made contact; the sparks you see flying are from the wheelie bars dragging the racing surface.

dwLike Mullins, Wolfe then has to bring in every bit of skill he’s ever developed behind the wheel to save the car, as he successfully spins the Camaro around, then whips it back the other direction twice without rolling over onto its roof.

Unfortunately, despite giving the fans more than their moneys worth during qualifying, Mullins failed to make the field and Wolfe, who was in at No. 3 with a 5.92, was unable to make the call for eliminations after that intense lap on Saturday evening.

Kevin McCurdy was the eventual winner in Pro Mod at the MDIR’s annual Door Wars, as he defeated teammate Tyler Hard in the final round, 5.97 to 6.17.
