Video: Dynojet Employees Showdown in Harley vs Mustang Race

Musclecars vs motorcycles is a fairly old rivalry. Bikes offer extreme lightweight, which in turn gives them lightning quick acceleration. In spite of their extreme horsepower advantage, muscelcars often can’t make up the difference in power to weight ratio, and in a drag race it is often the bike that possesses the advantage, even though on paper a motorcycle will often have only about one quarter the power of the car it’s competing against.

Often times any race between friends is the result of a little healthy smack-talk and bench racing. The guys at Dynojet Research are no different. Senior Project Manager Dusty Schaller was recently giving the company’s Markting Manager, Will Fong, a hard time about his Mustang, stating that he could beat the supercharged 5.0 with a stock Honda F4I crotch-rocket.

Rather than take on the crotch rocket though, Fong and Schaller came up with the idea of pitting the modified Mustang against a Modified Harley. A plan was hatched for a showdown, the Magnuson boosted, and SCT tuned 5.0 would face off against a Sean Ray Turbo equipped and Dynojet Powervision tuned Harley.

Of course no showdown from Dynojet would complete without a few runs on the dyno itself to see where the two competitors were making power and make sure the tunes are in order.

The turbo’d Harley rang in heftily with 161 hp and nearly 157 ft-lbs of torque. The Mustang spun the rollers to make 569 hp, and 439 ft-lbs of torque at it’s rear wheels. Both vehicles produced healthy horsepower figures, and going by dyno numbers alone you could easily be fooled into thinking it was advantage-Mustang.

The two squared off on the quarter mile, daily driven Mustang on Nitto drag radials, vs Turbo Harley show bike. At the end of the night, Fong piloted the Mustang to a best time of 11.63 at 120.72 mph. More than respectable numbers for a full weight street car. It pains us to say though, Schaller on the Harley took the lead in every race, with a best on the night of 10.80 at 124.8 mph. Proof again that while horsepower gets you bragging rights, it all ultimately comes down to what kind of numbers you can pull off at the track. Check out the video for more details on these rides and to hear as well as see them in action on the dyno and track.
