The NMRA, the world’s leading all-Ford drag racing event series, is set to introduce an all-new eliminator known as Coyote Stock beginning at the season-opening Nitto Tire Spring Break Shootout in Bradenton, Fla. on March 1-4, and already prospective racers have been turning laps over the winter on their class legal combinations to get a leg up on the field when the gates open in just three weeks.

Among those are past NMRA True Street competitor Joe Charles, who clicked off an impressive 10.95 at 119 MPH from his mean-sounding Mustang with a sealed 5.0L Coyote powerplant.

Made official in early December after months of planning and discussion on the part of interested racers, Coyote Stock is designed as a heads-up category for cars utilizing a spec, sealed version of Ford’s already-famous new 5.0L DOHC Coyote engine, paired with a spec, sealed processor. Adding some variety to the category, the Coyote engines can be dropped into any year model Mustang or Ford vehicle from 1954 to present, granted they’re able to tip the scales at or above 3,200 pounds. Racers have the option of Ford OE and Tremec manual transmissions.

Based on the incredible numbers that the stock and slightly modified 2011-12 Mustangs have been able to produce from the new-age 5.0L, there was little doubt that this could and would be a 10-second class, and these early testing figures certainly back that up.
