Regular viewers of Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws are certainly familiar with the concept of Cash Days, where sixteen racers coverage on an open strip of road and race until one man is left standing in a winner-take-all contest. Well the organizers of the popular event TX2K in Texas have been putting on a Cash Days of their own, with what’s know as Dig Night, sponsored and promoted by Stance Autoworks.
Like the Cash Days races on Street Outlaws, Dig Night is a real-deal street race, contested on a true section of paved public roadway. But it is, in no way, an illegal event, as local law enforcement are involved in the preparations of the event. Ambulances are also on site in the event that things get a little out control.
To keep the competition fair, TX2K and Dig Night officials kept the location of the races undisclosed until just prior to the event night (which was actually postponed by rain and run on the Sunday of TX2K, held in Houston at the Royal Purple Raceway) so that no one could arrive early and do some testing to get a competitive edge. Spectator tickets were sold to watch the racing, which took place in an industrial area on the northwest side of Houston, and were clearly a hot commodity, as witnessed by the elbow-to-elbow crowd behind the combatants in each and every race.
The race had a $200 buy-in, with the winner pocketing a cool $10,000.
According to Faisal Rahman, the promoter of Dig Night, the whole premise is to get people away from unsupervised, purely illegal races and bring it into a safer environment that simulates a legit street race.
