Over the last couple of seasons, we’ve featured John Mihovetz’ awesome modular-powered Ford Mustang here on the pages of DRAGZINE as he’s steadily climbed the performance ladder during his racing endeavors and exploits of Ford’s 4.6L engine, but all of his performances in the past pales in comparison to the numbers recorded over the weekend at the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona.
During the opening round of qualifying on Thursday afternoon, Mihovetz, whose Accufab Racing facility is just a couple of minutes down the road from the famed Pomona Raceway, left everyone in attendance and even those on the internet speechless with a 6.083 at 236.84 MPH from his 281 cubic inch, twin turbocharged Ford Mustang. Not only was this Mihovetzs’ career best pass, but it was nearly eight tenths of a seconds quicker than the current BB/AT national record, the category within Competition Eliminator for which he was competing.
Running on an index of 7.27 in BB/AT, Mihovetz’ lap was an unreal 1.187-seconds under the index. The next closest qualifier was Brian Browell at 0.671-seconds under the index.
In subsequent rounds of qualifying, John laid down runs of 6.14 and 6.42, and in the opening round of eliminations, took a huge index hit for the next round with a 6.33, 0.940-seconds under the index to down heavy hitter Dan Fletcher. An impressive 6.26 in round three. however, wasn’t enough to overcome Scott McClay, thanks in part to an index that had been battered down to 6.83 from the 7.27 it began the weekend at. Nonetheless, that 6.08 served notice what the little 281 modular is capable of, and what we might expect to see at this weekends Street Car Super Nationals in Las Vegas this weekend.
