Video: MMR GT500 Cracks 200 MPH Quarter Mile

What can you do in seven seconds? If the kettle is boiling, you can make your morning coffee (from instant) and add cream in about that time. Its about the same time it takes to run out of patience with someone that doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Seven seconds is also the time it takes Mark Lutton’s car to run the quarter mile these days.

Lutton has a history of going faster. His shop in Camarillo, CA, Modular Mustang Racing, has been turning out fast cars for more than 15 years and it seems that every year, they just keep getting faster. In 2003, Lutton’s team turned out the fastest 5-speed Mustang with an 8.99 @ 154 mph claim to fame.

The following year, they pushed a stock suspension, mod motor powered Mustang to an 8.07 @ 176.8 mph record. Not too long ago, their 2005-bodied Mustang, powered by a claimed 2100 hp mod motor, generated a time slip of 7.88 @ 182 mph. All of this is pretty amazing, but the best result to date is also the most recent. On “The Strip” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the team posted an amazing 7.18 @ 200.56 mph in their full bodied GT500.

With a pair of Garrett 80mm turbochargers under the hood, hooked into a Ford Racing 5.4-liter, the Grabber Blue pony is reported to be packing in excess of 2200 hp. Recent initiatives on weight reduction, using carbon fiber replacement body panels, have paid off, dropping the race car’s weight down to 2900 pounds. The run you’ll see in the video here is a 7.18 @ 200.56 mph. Surely, a 6-second run has to be not too far into the future for this snake.

If you’re looking to go fast yourself, MMR will build your own turn-key car for Outlaw or Drag Radial competition. Mid-seven second time slips can be yours for just shy of $90K. Getting into the sixes will cost a lot more.
