When a race team is testing before a big event they’ll often have two objectives: get a baseline of what the car can do in certain conditions, and then turn it up past kill to see what will stick. While prepping for the Jamboree race in Australia this past weekend, Heat Treatments Racing lit the fuse on their Skyline R32 GTR to see what it would do, and it cranked out a record setting 198 mile per hour blast.
The stock R32 Skyline was designed for the purpose of kicking ass and taking names in Group A Rally Racing. From the factory the R32 came in AWD trim with the 2.6 liter RB26DETT twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine backed by a five-speed manual transmission. The R32 Skyline went on to dominate at various levels of rally racing and became a highly desirable ride for the street.
Team HTR didn’t earn the designation of the world’s fastest Skyline by just throwing some parts together and hoping for the best. The R32 power plant is controlled by a Motec ECU, has a June head, HKS Cams and makes over 1,500 horsepower while screaming to 10,000 RPM’s. Shifting duties are handled by an air-assisted Liberty five-speed unit putting the power down to a set of Koni coilovers at all corners.
This car has been deep into the 7.50’s already, but on this pass the driver earned his pay. The unique howl of the R32 and ‘gorilla flames’ it shoots while on the chip are insane. As the car goes down track on the 198 mile per hour pass it wanted to go in every direction but straight, even with the AWD working. Check out this video from Drag Import Media that shows how much of an animal this Skyline is.
