It’s been a rough and tumble season thus far for the NHRA Pro Modified category, what with a rash of unfortunate accidents and even a devastating fire, and last weekend in Norwalk, series regular Chris Juliano became the latest in a series of drivers to take an undesired extracurricular excursion.
Juliano, like Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Steve Harker, who also crashed in Norwalk, was sitting outside the qualified field for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals as the final session came around, with a 25th best 6.61 to that point in the weekend. Juliano, in his nitrous oxide-assisted, 872 cubic inch 1967 Ford Mustang, was running in the right lane opposite of Chip King when he got loose on the top end, eventually turning across the lane and over onto his roof. The Mustang nosed into the wall and began a long slide to a stop on its roof.
Fortunately, the Iberia, Missouri native was able to climb from the car under his own power without injury, and without any significant impacts to the guardrails, should be back in action sooner rather than later.
Juliano’s incident is one of several in the first five races of the season, including those by Dan Stevenson, Rickie Smith, Sidnei Frigo, and Shane Molinari.
