Most of us will never know what it’s like to strap into a monstrous nitro-breathing race car and run it out the back door in the quarter mile, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get closer than ever. Modern action sports cameras like the GoPro have provided some breathtaking views of motorsports that were unthinkable 10 years ago. Les Mayhew of NitroAmerica has become a master of using an action sports camera to capture the unique sights of drag racing. His newest video gives some killer views of what its like to take a ride in — and on — a nitro powered front engine dragster.
The subject of this video is none other than old school racer Jim Murphy, who has been wheeling a nitro car since the early 1970’s. From the 70’s until the 90’s Murphy ran at different levels, piloting cars in both nitro categories and running against the best in the business. Later, Murphy discovered the world of nostalgia nitro drag racing and has since been a fixture on the west coast with his WW2 racing team.
Each of the views in this video gives an interesting perspective of what happens during a nostalgia fuel car pass. From the driver’s perspective, you get an opportunity to experience what the driver sees and feels on a pass. We see that Murphy really has to wrestle with the car as he imposes his will to keep it straight in the groove and rolling out. The reverse shot facing the engine demonstrates just how quick these cars move down the track. Sit back, crank up the volume, and drink in all the nitro goodness this video has to offer.
