Australian drag racing standout Paul Mouhayet has pretty well been through it all in a doorslammer over the last couple of years — from setting an all-time world record speed on 10.5W tires at over 252 MPH to smacking the wall, blowing the whole rear half of his Mustang off at over 240 miles per hour, and dancing around the shutdown area with no parachutes at well in excess of 200 — and he’s handled it all like a man with ice in his veins. There’s nothing Mouhayet won’t drive, no race car too fast, and no ride too wild.
On Saturday (or the late Friday evening hours for those of us here in the United States) Mouhayet went for another intense excursion during the Atura Championship Series event at the Sydney Dragway when the parachutes on his Boss Buckets twin-turbo Mustang failed at the conclusion of a 242 mile per hour pass.
Unfortunately, unlike his previous no-chutes lap in which he shut the car down a bit early, this time he took it clear to the boards, leaving him that much less distance to get the car reigned in. The result, despite his best efforts, was a trip through the sand, into and through the safety net, and an incredibly hard impact into the retaining wall on the other side of said net.
As you can hear in the onboard video, Mouhayet was in obvious pain with injuries to his ankle, and reported this morning a possible fracture. He also indicated that the car is a “mess”, but like the tough S.O.B. that he is, he’s already vowed this won’t stop he and the Moits Racing team and that they will indeed be back with this record-setting car.
Mouhayet and the Moits camp were scheduled to travel stateside this week to campaign their brand new Outlaw Pro Modified Mustang built by Tim McAmis Race Cars at the inaugural Street Car Super Nationals, but those plans may be on hold pending his possible injuries. We’ll have a report on the team’s status later in the week.
