Video: Spectacular Vintage Drag Racing Footage

Who doesn’t love some great old vintage drag racing footage? Young and old, whether you were there to witness it or your only connection to the era is your grandfathers old, worn magazines – if you’re a drag racing fanatic, the cars, the stars, and the cackle of the golden age are just plain cool. We found a couple of great old documentary videos showcasing many of the great attributes of the yesteryear of the sport that just couldn’t not be shared.

The first video comes from a 1971 film entitled “The Age of Drag Racing,” and features some of the best footage from the period that we’ve ever seen. The venue is the Ontario Motor speedway, and the event is the famed “Super Nationals.” With over 200 cars in competition amongst Funny Car, Pro Stock, and other categories. Originally aired on ESPN2 in what looks to be the late 1990’s the film is narrated by Dave Despain and features some incredible camera angles and footage of some of the greatest racers of all time, in their prime. The featured racer is the legendary “Dandy” Dick Landy, who is seen smoking his signature cigar from the in-car camera as he pops the clutch and rows the gear in his Pro Stocker.

The second video comes to us from the 1982 NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, where we see some of the all-time greats, including Shirley Muldowney, Gary Beck, Connie Kalitta, Billy Meyer, and Don Prudhomme. And best of all, you get to enjoy the commentary of the great Dave McClelland.
