At this year’s Annual Mustang/F-Body meet, held in Kansas City each fall, neither a Mustang nor an F-Body found its way to the finals of the racing portion of the event, which is open to all makes and models, given they complete the mandatory 50-mile cruise. Instead, another pair of domestic badasses – both well-known in their respective circles and throughout the racing community – blitzed the competition: Street legal hero Larry Larson and John Andrade, Jr of Street Outlaws fame.
Larson was competing in his beloved Chevy II, in which he won the vaunted Drag Week competition a staggering five times, while Andrade was wheeling his popular “Cutty” Oldsmobile from Oklahoma City, sporting it’s “still-working-the-kinks-out” turbo LS powerplant. The two met up in the finals, where Andrade put a nasty holeshot on Larson, but couldn’t hold off the big top end charge from the Deuce, which out mph’d the Cutty by a full eight miles per hour. The elapsed times: Larson with a 5.08 to Andrade’s 5.41.
Andrade had mentioned earlier in the day that his combo was inexplicably down on power, which likely made the difference in the race since he did his job and drilled the tree, leaving the seasoned vet with a lot of real estate to make up. Larson did, however, and took the win by “a couple of cars”, according to Andrade.
Larson’s wicked Deuce put on a wicked fireworks show as he built boost on the starting line … the show made even more spectacular if you slow the video’s speed using the YouTube controls. Notice the fireballs not only exiting the rear of the full-length exhaust system, but also popping out of the wastegate just behind the front wheel.
The Mustang/F-Body Meet faithful will have to wait another year to see if one of their brethren can knock off the field and unseat this year’s champ, Larry Larson. Special thanks to Aaron Gonzales/NXGonzo for the excellent footage!
