By now, most of America’s gearhead population is familiar with Discovery Channel’s breakout street racing show, Street Outlaws. What many may not know is that before the show, Oklahoma City’s fastest street-raced cars had been duking it out for the coveted Number 1 spot on the list for years. In this video, we get to witness the very last “callout” for the top spot before the TV cameras found their way to the 405 area code. These hot rods just might look familiar!
According to the video’s description, Shawn Ellington’s Murder Nova resides at the number one spot and, after months of smack talk, Dave Comstock in the Sonoma has finally issued an official callout. The two heavy hitters, who continued to reign atop the list for quite some time after the OKC guys became household names, line up and battle it out for the crown… twice!
In the first race, Shawn appears to get a little too antsy and jumps the start by quite a bit, resulting in a loss. However, it appears Dave wants to take the crown on a win instead of a technicality, so the pair line up again for another go ’round. This time, both drivers leave on the light and run an absolutely stellar side-by-side race — so close in fact that without an easily-distinguishable finish line in the video, it is impossible to tell who won just from the footage. However, it is revealed at the end that Shawn had taken the win and retained the top spot on what would become the most famous “list” in gearhead pop culture.
While the guys have made some drastic changes to these cars, or in Dave’s case, built completely new ones, it is clear the Street Outlaws gang has had the “bug” for quite some time, as these aren’t cars that just showed up on the streets of Oklahoma City running this well. It’s cool to see this glimpse into the streets of the 405 before the lights and cameras. There’s definitely more than enough action, though!
