On Saturday evening, Outlaw 10.5 competitors T.J. Kasper and Lou Sciortino were involved in a high-speed crash just beyond the eighth-mile finish stripe at the Atco Raceway in New Jersey that both drivers fortunately walked away from.
Kasper, driving Joe Copson’s stunning twin-turbo 2010 Chevrolet Camaro was running in the right lane opposite of Sciortino’s nitrous-assisted 1969 Camaro during eliminations. From the flash of the green the two were welded together, but as they neared the eighth-mile cones, it all went awry for both drivers. At virtually the same moment that Sciortino’s mount lit up the night sky with a massive nitrous backfire while Kasper, who had been charing hard on the wheelie bars, drifted toward the centerline and lost control of his machine.
Kasper’s Camaro, after tagging the right lane guardrail, shot back across the race track in front of Sciortino and struck the opposing concrete barrier, forcing him to take evasive action to avoid a collision. That unfortunately sent Sciortino out of control, as he slammed into the right lane wall before coming to a stop.
The damage to the two cars was reportedly largely cosmetic, and both racers are already making plans to repair their respective cars in the offseason to get back on track in the spring as good as new. But nevertheless, we hate to see a pair of gorgeous race cars wadded up like this.
