Mark Dykeman’s 1972 Z28 Camaro known as the “Blue Goose” has been flying low and fast at New England Dragway during their NEX275 series this season and making some stout passes. This past weekend during one of the NEX275 final events, the Blue Goose got its feathers ruffled a little bit when driver Jack Dykeman had a small brush with the wall.

The race weekend was going well for the Dykeman crew as they had their ProCharger-fed Camaro dialed in and running well with a record-setting pass. “We took the record when Jack ran a 4.58 in the first qualifier and then a 4.57 in the second. We turned it up more for the final qualifier and smoked the tires so we knew the track was getting hot,” Dykeman said.

Going into the first round, Dykeman had the bye and decided to see what the track would hold, and again experienced tire smoke. “After the tires went up in smoke during the bye run it was obvious the track was getting a little hot. For the second round we put a 4.58 tune in it and after the 60-foot mark it went up in smoke again, Jack tried to pedal it and the car just hooked hard to the left,” Mark explains.

To his credit, Jack did all he could to keep the car’s impact with the wall from being any worse than what it was. That pedal job likely saved the car from going to the chassis shop for extensive repairs and the Dykeman team isn’t letting this small setback slow them down. “We have a new carbon front end being made at Unlimited and should be here in time for No Mercy,” Mark says.
