Video: Tim Tindle Survives Horrifying U.S. Nationals Pro Mod Crash

Veteran Pro Modified racer Tim Tindle survived a horrifying high-speed crash while competing at the Chevrolet Performance NHRA U.S. Nationals on Sunday when his Agave Underground Tequila 1968 Camaro went out of control and struck the guardrail before ending up on the opposite side of the wall near the finish line.

Tindle, from Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., was competing alongside Troy Coughlin in the opening round of Pro Modified eliminations on Sunday evening when his Camaro began to march toward the centerline just before half track. Tindle corrected to bring the car back into the groove, but lost control as it shot back across the lane and struck the wall on its side at a perpendicular angle. In a rather rare scene, the car climbed atop the guardrail and was then launched into the air by the raised top of the concrete barrier, sending Tindle into a scary and violent series of barrel rolls in the grass alongside the track.

Several tense moments ensued as the NHRA Safety Safari attended to Tindle before NHRA announcer Alan Reinhart allowed the horrified crowd to breathe once again as he shared the good news that Tindle had exited the mangled race car under his own power. Tindle was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he remained until Wednesday for observation.

According to son, TJ, Tindle suffered a fracture on his upper spine in the crash, but was otherwise unhurt in one of the worst crashes in recent memory.

“We have to take our hats off to Tim McAmis, our chassis builder, and all the safety manufacturers who provide us with equipment that does exactly what it is supposed to do in worst-case scenarios such as this,” said team owner Danny Rowe. “Personally, I can’t say enough as to the job that all the safety equipment did in keeping Tim safe. We are all very thankful that he’s going to be fine and back racing with us again soon.

“The outpouring of support from the drag racing community has been amazing and I know all the phone calls and text messages have meant a lot to the Tindle Family. We may be fierce competitors on race day, but when the time comes this group of people – especially all our fellow Pro Mod teams – is one big family.”

Tindle joined the Danny Rowe Racing organization in July behind the wheel of the second Agave Underground Tequila machine. He formerly campaigned a supercharged Ford Mustang with the NHRA Pro Mod Series before turning his efforts to outlaw racing and the ADRL and X-DRL, where he has been competing this season with his son in a pair of Mustangs.

From all of us at Dragzine, we wish Tindle a speedy recovery and a swift return to racing.
