Nebraska-based Top Sportsman racer Wade Kiefer went for the ride of the weekend at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at the Bandimere Speedway near Denver when he lost control of his 1963 Corvette during qualifying and struck the retaining wall tail-first.
Kiefer, with a best run of 8.03-seconds under his belt, was on his final tune-up pass during the third session of qualifying before going into eliminations, racing alongside Greg Lair in his 2014 Camaro. From the outset, it’s Lair that looks to be headed for trouble, as he immediately heads toward the centerline and continues under power more than a full car width out of the groove. But he soon lifts to gather it back up, and at that point all of the attention turns to Kiefer, as his corvette makes a quick move to the left, swings around — amazingly, without hooking a tire and barrel-rolling — and spins across both lanes, striking the opposing concrete barrier facing the opposite way.
Lair, meanwhile, has to be credited for some evasive maneuvering across both lanes while still moving along at a pretty good lick to avoid the crash happening right in front of him in his own lane.
For Kiefer…well, the situation and the damage certainly could’ve been a lot worse, and we wish him well in getting that sleek Corvette patched back up and back out on the race track.
