Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek Maryland holds their World Cup Finals Imports vs. Domestics event during the late fall each year, where the cool, fall air makes for record shattering performance on the track, and this year was no exception. It also means more horsepower for a racer to try and put down to the pavement on a cold racing surface, and that can spell disaster in a hurry.
In this video, you see the back end of the rotary-powered import start to come around, sending him towards the centerline. At that point, the driver hit the brakes when he saw he was heading for the Mustang. The import came close to saving it but ran right into Chip Provenza’s X275 1999 Ford Mustang driven by Shane Jennings. Both cars left the starting line with slow reaction times and the Mustang started into a wheelstand. Jennings pedaled it to save the wheelie bar-less car from going to the moon. If that would’ve have been a clean pass for the Mustang, the import would have missed him and probably saved it. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen and we have the wreckage you see here.
Provenza stated that it’s going to cost a lot to repair his car and the whole passenger side is” junk.” No word on how much damage the import sustained. This just goes to show you that anything can happen when you line your car up and go head-to-head with another racer.
