The Walker team has been testing over the last several weeks. The immediate problem was to calm the new beast down. Walker said “The new engine has so much more torque. We had to rethink our gearing and soften the nitrous set up to get this thing down the track”. So far progress is very promising. The best time is a 6.16 @ 224.96 mph. The team has also reduced their short track times over the old set up. Walker explained “The plan is to start soft and put the power back in the engine slowly as we are able to get a handle on the increase in power.”
Walker hopes to run in the 6.0 second range with the new engine. He said, “We hope to be more consistent and just go rounds. I am not sure if we can get this car in the fives. I think low sixes are a reasonable goal.” Last year the Walker Racing Group earned a double Championship on the West Coast winning the season with both the Pacific Street Car Association (PSCA) and the West Coast Hot Rod Association. It was a season sweep with the team additionally taking the PSCA’s Sin City Challenge and Golden State sweep. This season the competition has stepped it up and last years 6.30’s that gained the Championship just won’t do it. Walker said, “The timing is right for the step up with many teams now running in the teens here on the West Coast.”
Also new for Walker Racing is a sponsorship relationship with ProComp MotorSport. The California based company features a complete catalog of performance parts for the street, strip, and muscle car enthusiast to include; engine components, exhaust packages, suspension, brakes, accessories and more. The company is working on a new “Black Label” series to reach a market share of racers on Walkers level. The Walker Racing 1974 El Camino got a new ProComp MotorSport wrap, which will debut at the West Coast Hot Rod Associations Summer Nationals in Bakersfield June 4-5, 2010.
