It would probably be fair to say that nearly every drag racer, somewhere deep down, can admit they’d love to own a drag strip. Sure, they’re expensive, and time-consuming, and come with a lot of risk, but there’s also great personal reward (and financial, if you play your cards right) in doing something good for the racing community. Plus, you can make runs down it whenever you want, which sure beats having a putting green or a fishing lake in your yard if drag racing is your thing.

Well, if you happen to have a cool million-plus (don’t we all wish we had that, too) sitting around and you’re up for a challenge, there’s another opportunity to throw your hat in the drag racing ring.

Harrisburg, Illinois’ Accelaquarter Raceway — interestingly named, since it is in fact only an 1/8-mile — has been listed for sale with Shawnee Trails Realty for an asking price of $1.2 million for the 48 acre property. Frank Sisk, the owner and operator of the virtually brand new race track, decided to offload the track that he personally invested his time and resources into over the last five years, citing personal health concerns.

The track, opened in 1963, operated through the 1985 season before its gates were shuttered and it fell into disrepair. In 2010, a group collaborated to revive the strip, but when their efforts proved potentially short-lived, Sisk, a local mining company repair business owner and drag racer himself, stepped in in 2012 and purchased the track, pouring over $1 million into facility upgrades. This included widening the lanes, adding 650 feet of shutdown length, upgrading the timing tower and timing system, adding full-length concrete guardrails, pouring a blacktop parking lot, and constructing new covered grandstands. Once complete in 2013, Sisk had constructed one of the finer 1/8-mile drag strips in the country.

Unlike other tracks we find up for sale that are in need of a little TLC or some serious improvements in operation, Accelaquarter is ready to run — put the key in the gate lock, turn it, and go. From there, it’s all about your business acumen.
