Orlando World Street Nationals 2010 Same Day Coverage

The biggest door car race of the entire year happens this weekend in Orlando. The World Street Nationals license plates is something you see on cars around the United States as a souvenir that they participated at this huge race. Come back to DRAGZINE all weekend as well will be bringing you comprehensive race coverage all weekend.

Orlando Regular Tony Christian has a new sponser on the side of his Grand Am. Braille battery is helping him out this weekend.

Frank Mewshaw is here fresh off his NMCA championship ready to do battle in Outlaw 10.5.

Jeff Lutz made the trek to Orlando with two entries. His twin turbocharged Grand Am in Super Pro Street and the 1957 Chevy that he will drive in Heavy Street this weekend.

All kinds of cars make the ride to Orlando for the party and great racing. This little Mustang belongs to Jeff Gibbud from the Tampa Bay area where he normally run the 6.50 index class at Sunshine dragstrip and put a little extra nitrous to it this weekend to run in the Drag Radial class and have some fun with the rest of the crew.

Archie Marasco is another car from Real Speed and he is here after cracking into the 4's in the 1/8th at Bradenton two weeks ago. A new SBF with twin 88's will have them looking for 200 MPH this weekend. Shop owner Walt Drakeford is alo here with his T Bird and sporting a black out job to cover up a racign stripe down one side of the car.

Rick Prospero drove up with this sweet little 65 Chevy II running Drag Radial. He ran some 8.30's during this years Drag Week so it's fully streetable. It's got a 460 ci BBC with twin 75 MM turbos and a TH 400 trans.

Kevin Fiscus has made the switch the the popular X275 class so the car has a 360 ci SBF with twin 800 M turbos. He hopes to got some rounds in Drag Radial and have a good time. His first pass will be at the NHRA unleashed weight.

Mel Nelson has really come around with the program recently, winning the Shakedown and Bradenton's ODRC, then finishing runner up to David Wolfe last week. Wolfe and Hance are not here in Radial so it's looking like Mel and Paul Major are the favorites.

Steve Morris is here again this year with the Caprice wagon with a little more power that last year. He runs a 3 speed trans @ 3600 pounds and is looking to crack into the sixes here this weekend.

Javiar Ortiz runs this Kilo Racing RX-7 turbo entry for the Import class which should have near 20 cars here for the event. Several teams are looking to be the first car to run sixes here in Orlando for 2010.

2009 Heavy Street runner up Sam Gottier is here after his Heavy Street win at Shakedown and has been running some low 6.90's. A weight break for this year should help his nitrous powered Chevelle out. The engine is a 762 ci piece from Scotty's Racing Technology in Spring Hill.

David Hance hurt his radial car last week and will be running in Pro Street with the twin turbo Hemi powered 57 Chevy instead.

The last car in the pits this morning belongs to Willard Howard from Stuart, Florida. He is running Heavy Street this weekend with a naturally aspirated 500 ci engine. They just made the call for Super Pro Street to load up. Stay tuned for updates..

Round One Qualifying

Jeff Lutz is number one after the first round of Super Pro Street with a 6.36.

Rocky Raynor ran into tire shake about one hundred feet into the run and had to abort his run.

Chris Rini had an outstanding .986 sixty foot time but then rattled the tires. The ATI team look to be in top form this weekend with their Dodge Stratus.

Gregory Dennis was the first one to be pushed back after having trouble stanging and the car kept shutting off.

Jimmy marino picked up the West Palm Beach based law firm of Gordon and Donner to help with expences this weekend. he qualified 4th with a .83 @ 178

Nicole Lyons from Northridge California drives a 99 Monte Carlo on the bottle. Her 7.83 was good for ninth int he first session.

The Rat Ro look is in right now and this newish Tim McCammis 57 Chevy is owned by Larry Higginbottham and runs a Kobelco supercharger. He spun and shut off early with a 12.00.

Many racers seem to have underestimated the track in the first session resulting in many aborted runs and tire shake. Mike Hill ran an easy 7.73 @ 130 ater shutting down early.

Canadian racer Sandro Sementilli was the first 10.5 car to make a good pass with a 7.18 @ 191.

Tim Lynch made a nice easy pass for the top spot in OL 10.5.

Jorge Juarbe took the top spot by a mile in Extreme Import with a 7.79 @ 158 in his 72 Datsun

Eric Kenward made another wild pass in his wagon, which is still on a 275 radial this weekend.

Randy Steward drove his mustang to the track this morning then clicked off a very impressive low nine second pass.

Mel Nelson was one of the many drag radial entries that were too aggressive in this morning's session. Look for the et's to improve in the evening qualifying session.

Gotier had the quickest run in the first session of Heavy Street with a 7.14 @ 190.

This hard charging 75 Nova belongs to the second qualifier John Townsend from Daytona Florida. The unassuming ride had a 572 ci BBC and ran 7.92 @ 173 on a clean hit.

Jason Reuckert from VP is here this weekend once again overseeing the track conditions. Here he sprays some compound before round 2 of the Pro Street class.

Round 1 Pit Notes

John Sloan broke the transmission on his second pass in Super Pro Street after pedaling the car. They are going to try and make repairs but are unsure of the damage right now.

Rockin Rob Cherkas is running Super Pro Street this weekend and is sporting a new engine and a fresh ggator themed wrap. His second hit was a 7.80, good enough for a top ten spot. His 82 Vette has a F2-R Procharged SBC under the hood tuned by Dale Cherry at Injection Connection. The car was also recently upgrades by Montana Brothers Race Cars. This is the first race with the new combo which Robs says should run mud sixes after is worked out.

Frank Meshaw had some hard luck breaking a timing belt on his first pass. They have it all torn down and are waiting on a parts delivery in a couple of hours to see if they can patch it up.

Another racer that suffered some engine damage was Eric Kenward. They are waiting on a replacement piston.

This cool little Toyota wagon is a full street legal ride that belongs to Pedro Alguire from Palm Bay, Florida. it's got a 13B Mazda Rotary engine and has been a best of 9.50. They have yet to run today.

In an effort to have a more fan friendly atmosphere for the import crowd they have set up a food booth on the west side of the pit area.

Crfedit Man Haskel Mackowski is here diving a new ride owned by Maceellino Sotolongo. This is the first time Haskell has driven a turbo car. The 351 based engine is stroked to 393 ci and has a 106 mm turbo. The car was built byAll Out Race Cars

Round 2 Notes

Super Pro Street has over 35 cars already qualified and more have been rolling through the gate all day long.

Susan Vanderspool's crowd pleasing BMW is solidly in the field with a personal best 7.97.

Tony Christian took the the number one spot in Super Pro Street with an amazing 6.25 in the heat. Jeff Lutz nearly regained the top spot one pair later with a 6.26.

Current number one qualifier in heavy street Sam Gottier broke a rocker and lifter. Replacement parts are one the way and he should be good to go for tomorrow's action.

Kevin Fiscus moved into the top spot in Radial Tire in the second round with a 7.64 second blast.

Tom Kempf if currently third in drag radial with a best run of 8.09 through two rounds.

Damon Chin made his first run in Extreme Import in the second session and jumping right to the number one position with a 7.23 @ 195 MPH

Jamie Rodriguez brought his 80 Corolla up from West Palm Beach and ran a 7.69 @ 147 for sixth qualifier.

Chris Fenn found some traction on his second run. The Orlando Florida racer improved his time from 10.04 to 9.40 @ 143 amd still managed to drop one spot.

"Big Lo' Angelo Graham put up a fine 7.93 for the second spot on the drag radial ladder. The Miami based racer has really improved their program over the last year.

Buck Walker was a late arrival this after noon making his first run in the second session. He probably wished he didn't after getting loose early and giving Archie Marasco a scare and nosing the Camaro into the wall.

it's only Friday here but as always they love to line the fence to get up close to the action.

Round 3 Notes

Chris Rini had the crowd cheering by capturing the number one spot in Super Pro Street by less than a hundredth of a second.

Dwanye Wolfe had a little fire on the return road, the orlando speedworld crew were quickly on the scene. Wolfe should be repaired in time for elminations on sunday.

Nicole Lyons has her 1999 Monte Carlo solidly in the Super Pro Street field at 16th.

Jerry Mitrovic put his Canadian based 03 Mustang in second spot after running a 6.71 @ 219 MPH.

Conrad Scarry jumped from seventeenth all the way to third after this wheels up pass in the final session of the day with a 6.73 @ 210. Craig Pio improved as well by .009 but fell to fourth.

Luis Rivera made his first hit in the third session of Extreme Import and went right up the number two spot with a 7.27 @ 192.

Chanito Vazquez got crossed up right away with his 89 Mitsubishi and did a good job of avoiding the wall.

Orlando Torres from Orlando is sitting outside the field with a 8.17 @ 164.

Archie Marasco continues to struggle applying his new combo to the racing surface, currently with a tire spinning 8.93 best.

Mel Nelson just took the top spot in drag radial in tonights session with a 7.47 at 217 mph.

We are done for tonight due to an oil down at the top end of the track. Jeff Lutz is among 13 heavy street entries that did not get to make a third pass today. Those cars will get thier shot tomorrow morning before the first round of Super Pro Street.
