PSCA Spring Break Super Show 2011 Same Day Coverage

SELECT COVERAGE BY DAY:

Saturday Qualifying

Overcast skies clearing to a warm spring afternoon greeted racers at the PSCA Spring Break Super Show in Fontana, California. The class turnout was greatly improved from what was hinted at by Friday’s test and tune, but the day was plagued with long breaks for cleanups. Still, as the sun slipped below the horizon, everyone had gotten a chance to make their three hits in preparation for eliminations tomorrow.

Special thanks to our event coverage sponsor Mickey Thompson.  Check out their great line of wheels and tires at www.mickeythompsontires.com.

ACCUFAB OUTLAW 10.5

With the Pro cars not running for points (though a few of the quieter ones are here to make test passes), the marquee class for the season opener is Outlaw 10.5. After three passes, top honors went to Greg Seth-Hunter with a diabolical 6.666-second pass, followed by Rick Snavely’s 6.812. Ron Weems and Mark Luton rounded out the six-second club, with a total of nine cars in the field.

1. Greg Seth-Hunter 6.666 @ 211.56
2. Rick Snavely 6.812 @ 211.69
3. Ron Weems 6.817 @ 200.86
4. Mark Luton 6.991 @ 205.04
5. Chris Kephart 7.032 @ 199.46
6. Gary Ross 7.155 @ 200.41
7. Johnny Coleman 7.227 @ 199.11
8. Gary Sougales 7.577 @ 195.68
9. Scot Slotten 11.108 @ 74.80

MAGNAFUEL EXTREME DRAG RADIAL

With only three cars in the qualified XDR field, it will basically be Bill Dunaway and Dana Cook squaring off in round #1 to see who gets to run Al Jiminez in the final, but so far neither driver has shown they’re within shouting distance – the race to watch tomorrow will be that first pairing.

1. Al Jiminez 7.739 @ 142.13
2. Bill Dunaway 8.395 @ 175.98
3. Dana Cook 8.812 @ 161.69

EDELBROCK HOT STREET

The all-motor Hot Street class drew a full ladder of 8 cars in qualifying today, with Victor Brum at the head of the class with an 8.159. Tony Aneian was a full tenth behind, and Daniel Bott was the better part of a tenth behind him to round out the top three. Of course, with as sensitive as these cars are to how good (or bad) the air is, anything can happen on Sunday, and close trap speeds show that there are plenty of cars making competitive power.

1. Victor Brum 8.159 @ 164.75
2. Tony Aneian 8.269 @ 162.84
3. Daniel Bott II 8.337 @ 163.51
4. George Mitchell 8.413 @ 160.10
5. Doug Broaddus 8.477 @ 162.92
6. Chris Madsen 8.500 @ 153.96
7. Bryan Corbett 8.530 @ 158.73
8. Craig Gustofson 15.189 @ 64.11

MICKEY THOMPSON TIRES WILD STREET

A nine-car field will make for a strange ladder in Wild Street tomorrow, but at least Artis Houston can count on a first-round competition bye thanks to a class-leading 7.651 that edged out #2 qualifier Jeff Young’s 7.688. Kevin Young, David Schwarz, Robert Thompson, and Ryan Jones all had a seven-second run to their credit today, making for a close field going into eliminations.

1. Artis Houston 7.651 @ 182.28
2. Jeff Young 7.668 @ 185.10
3. Kevin Young 7.724 @ 184.40
4. David Schwarz 7.819 @ 178.45
5. Robert Thompson 7.874 @ 186.61
6. Ryan Jones 7.963 @ 174.35
7. Casey Vantol 8.019 @ 174.64
8. Armen Maghdessian 8.358 @ 170.73
9. Chico Coleman 9.998 @ 133.71

K&N FILTERS LIMITED STREET

Limited Street saw one of the closest-fought battles in qualifying among the heads-up classes today, with Mark Washington barely nosing past Erick Aldrich, 8.343 to 8.351. Washington has a slight trap speed advantage, and both racers are clearly showing the rest of the field their taillights, with Mike Orban a half-second behind in third, and the rest of the six-car field scattered through the high eights to high tens.

1. Mark Washington 8.343 @ 165.01
2. Erick Aldrich 8.351 @ 163.41
3. Mike Orban 8.882 @ 159.32
4. Dana Westover 8.993 @ 159.64
5. Jack Avetisyan 9.224 @ 144.77
6. Gary Brandt Jr. 10.873 @ 123.81

VORTECH STREET CHALLENGE

For a class that has struggled more often than not in its short history, the true-street-tire Street Challenge category is doing great here in Fontana this weekend. 11 cars are in the field, and if you had plans on being in the top four, a single digit pass was going to be mandatory. Steve Fullgham had the best timeslip with a 9.544, and you’d have to go all the way down to the #8 spot before you found your first 11. A very healthy, very fast field for this unique class…

1. Steve Fullgham 9.544 @ 150.50
2. Mike Gitned 9.629 @ 148.89
3. Ron Shaw 9.786 @ 145.47
4. Jeffrey Cagle 9.808 @ 142.06
5. Anthony Smith 10.085 @ 118.62
