SELECT COVERAGE BY DAY:
Just when you think the drag racing season was over, Bradenton Motorsports gets in the last hurrah with the last major heads up drag race of the year at the Snowbird Nationals. With all the popular heads up racing classes all in one place, plan for a snow-free race weekend in Bradenton, Florida!
Special thanks to our event sponsor Mickey Thompson Tires, check out our full line of wheels and tires at www.mickeythompsontires.com.
The first day here at the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals has a test session, a bracket race and first round of qualifying for the heads up program later this afternoon. The weather is partly cloudy with pretty much zero chance of rain this weekend. Stay tuned for updates through out the weekend from Bradenton, Florida.
I got here just in time to catch Bill Luts and Brian Goss go down during the TNT session this afternoon. Luzt went down with a nice smooth run while Goss' X75 stang was clicked early. Turbos sure are quiet, and it's kinda strange to see and hear the supercharged SBF make so much more noise than a Pro Mod.
Local Outlaw 10.5 racer Rob Wells is fresh off his runner-up finish at the ODRC in October. He is usually good for low to mid 4.20's, we'll have to see who else is here this weekend.
Troy "In the Jungle" Pirez has been running X-275 with his old school F Body this year. He made a clean run to get down the track but it looked a little soft. Expect some 4.90's this weekend from team Pirez.
Alex Hossler made a hard right on his final run in testing this afternoon. No worries as he lifted early but the run was aborted. Pro Mod will be interesting this weekend, no doubt.
Round 1 Qualifying Results
Rond 1 Qualifying Notes
Sean Lyon is the lone car in the 4.80's in X275 so far, his 4.87 is just ahead of Jack Collins aka: "King Jack" 4.907.Lyons is from Panama City, Florida, Collins hails from Rocky Point, North Carolina.
Barry Mitchell now owns this Mustang formerly driven by "Skinnyman" Matt Mungall. his 5.20 was off pace after pedaling early, but the MPH is fine.
Goodtimer Tony Ridenour made a safe 4.65 run earning top position, he runs a twin Procharger setup.
David Hance broke the 5.s tonight with a 5.95 @ 246 MPH for top qualifier, behind him sits Adam Flamholc with a 6.03, all the way from Sweden where he is the European Pro Mod Champion and record holder.
Bill Lutz sits third in Outlaw Pro Mod running a 6.07 @ 244 with his twin turbo Camaro.
Pat Quesenberry put his 41 Willys in sixth today with a 4.32 @165 in Auto Pro Mod.
Rule changes for this years event have some racers scratching their heads. Screw blowers have been allowed along with no weight minimum. I will have more on this tomorrow. Two Al Anabi cars are on the lot with Von Smith leading the field with a 3.59 @ 211.
Outlaw 10.5 is full of capable cars this weekend with James Violante's 4.309 @ 169 earning top qualifier. The Nelson Competition powered entry uses a 747 ci. BBC with a Speedtech Nitrous system.
Dave French unleashed a personal best 4.58 @ 159 making him a happy man this evening. He has been struggling lately with assorted nitrous bugs and it seems he is getting things squared away now.
Chad Opaleski lost a valve last time here, he is back and good to go and still learning the Procharged combo after moving to the boosted side from nitrous.
Mel Nelson's 169.07 MPH is tops in class so far, he sits in third.
Evening Pit Notes
Tommy D'April had some debris in the fuel line on his qualifying pass resulting in head gasket failure as well as some damage to the head, and one sleeve. They will have a busy night getting it buttoned up for tomorrow. Tuner Quain Stott has a spare set of heads on hand and they have already replaced the sleeve.
Adam Flamholc purchased this car last year from Taylor Laster out of Texas. It now has a Swedish built Hemi by MMR with a new blower from Mike Janis. His first full run today put him in second position in Outlaw ProMod. Adam holds the European record with a 5.96. 'All the people here are nice and we feel very welcome here in the US. The track is awesome and we look forward to stepping up on Saturday" - Adam Flamholc
From left to right, Big Jay, John Sloan and Brian Keep. Seen here in Brian's trailer discussing the finer points of jet spreads and pounds per minute nitrous flow, I think Brian was confusing all of us.
