Yellow Bullet Nationals 2011 Same Day Coverage

SELECT COVERAGE BY DAY:

Welcome to day two of the Yellow Bullet Nationals. We are here today under cloudy skies again, not a bad thing since it keeps the air andtrack temp down to reasonable levels. Last night we had some record breaking performances here in Outlaw 10.5 and Drag Radial, today the some folks are looking to improve and the rest are looking to knock them back. The spectators are filling up and racers are still trickling in for what promises to be a great day of racing.

Special thanks to our event coverage sponsor Mickey Thompson Tires.  Check out their great line of street/strip wheels and tires at www.mickeythompsontires.com.

The track personell woked hard this morning prepping the trak so we could start on time at 10 AM.
Tommy Deez has this sweet twin turbo 600 ci. BBC built by Lorenzo’s and tuned by Steve Petty. The truck was originally built by the late Leo Barnaby and rebuilt by K&K Race Cars after hitting the wall at last years Shakedown at E-Town. Tommy is from Philly and has been here testing since Wednesday.
He lost one leg while moving heavy equipment and has a custom hand brake “machete” in the truck. He runs consistant 4.30’s and is looking to step up a little and keep the consistancy and go some rounds this weekend.
Today I went the other direction to the front corner and I find one Doug Harris running Outlaw 10.5. The combo is an alcohol injected Chevy with Sonnys Chemi heads running twin 108 MM turbos hailing from New Jersey.
Yesterday morning I walked the pits from from to back and this 69 Roadrunner was the farthest from the tower. The car has been underconstruction since May this year. Owned by “Hemi” Fred Ristagno and driven by “Turbo” John Burris, they have run several test sessions with little luck, breaking “everything in the driveline that can break” according to Mr. Burris. He managed a 9.33 in testing.
Dean Marinis is the top car in X275 with only 4 runs on radials. Marinis is from Whitestone, New York and is trying his hand at class racing with this former grudge car.

Steve Drummand is here testing the Pro Mod and driving this Mustang owned by Steve Willingham in Drag Radial and built in house at Drummand Racecars. The car was recently updated with larger 91 MM turbos while keeping the trunk mount setup. Some weight was also removed lightening the car up to around 3500 pounds down from 3900. He is currently qualifies in 13th with a 5.80 @ 147.

We are through two rounds of qualifying and into round three now. Just one round for Top Sportsman as they didn’t run last night. Most of the top spots remain unchanged at this time.

YB member Mike Pyott sits in 6th place in 8.50 Index with his super clean 67 Camaro. He is based out of Holtwood PA.
Another Jersey racer John Langer is back in 27th. he races his 69 Trans Am in all motor classes, 8.50 Index and NMCA Pro Stock.
Francis Johnson has struggled this weekend keeping the car hooked up. His best run is a 5.52 @ 143, he is sitting outside the field in 18th.
Number one qualifier Paul Major lost traction in the second session kicking the car sideways and touching the front right fender into the wall. The damage is mostly cosmetic and they are fixing the car and should be ready for the final qualifying session tonight.
Anyone here last year remembers Dale Handy’s big wheelie, he vowed not to do it again this year after getting the car repaired and did a good job of avoiding carnage on this run in round two qualifying.
Ralph Hardesty is the winner of the 2011 YB Nationals best appearing car with his 67 Chevy II, he is currently qualified on the bump after round two with a 4.94 @ 146.

Round Three Qualifying Results

Marty Whit sits in 9th spot in Drag Radial with a 4.84 @ 160. Here he hangs the front in the third session.
Jon Rittenhouse was able to knock Dean Marinis out of the top spot in Z275 with a 4.93 @ 143 with his bottle fed 90 hatchback.
Justin Smith improved to 7th with a 5.02 @ 144. There are 12 cars in the in the 4’s and 5.0’s making for a tight bunched top half in X275
