ODRC: Same Day Coverage on Dragzine. Former ADRL champ Jason Hamstra wheeled the family dragster to the Open Outlaw crown over Tom Wirth at the Outlaw Drag Racing Championship at the Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida over the weekend. Hamstra was joined by Rob Wells, who downed a tough customer in Billy Glidden, 4.15 to 4.18, in the Outlaw 10.5 final. Josh Klugger drove the Fiscus-Klugger Mustang to the Limited Street crown over Bill Futch, and Sean Ashe added some X275 hardware to his growing collection with a defeat of Troy Pirez Sr. The Pro Modified final, between Mike Stavrinos and Frank Cersosimo was called to a draw when both competitors were unable to make the call for the final.
NHRA: Dragzine’s Event Recap. Bob Vandergriff Jr. scored the second win of his Top Fuel career Sunday in Las Vegas, downing the favored Tony Schumacher in the final round at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Ron Capps, needing to stay even with points leader Jack Beckman to keep his title hopes alive, did just that, edging Beckman in the Funny Car final and closing the gap to just four points going into Pomona. Allen Johnson downed fellow Mopar runner Vincent Nobile in the Pro Stock finale, placing him on the brink of collecting his long-awaited first Pro Stock title. Eddie Krawiec edged out Matt Smith in the two-wheeled final, and Troy Coughlin, needing a win to come from behind and collect the Pro Modified championship, drove away from Don Walsh Jr. in the final to earn the first NHRA championship of his long driving career. NMCA WEST: Joe Lepone Jr. scored a win in Pro Street at the NMCA WEST World Street Finals at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif. over the weekend. Lepone downed Mike Bowman, 6.16 to slowing 7.15. The Young brothers, Kevin and Jeff, squared off in the 275 Drag Radial final, with Kevin scoring a 7.37 to 7.48 victory.
