NHRA: Race Recap here on DRAGZINE. In a Pro Stock finale that will be talked about for years to come, second generation rookie driver Vincent Nobile captured his first NHRA Full Throttle victory with by the slightest of margins over local favorite Rodger Brogdon. Nobile grabbed a scant .007 to .009 advantage out of the gate and needed every bit of it, as his 6.625 squeaked by Brogdon’s quicker 6.624. Top Fuel newcomer Del Worsham continues to make his offseason transition look easy as he earned his third win of the young season, while Jeff Arend capitalized on Mike Neff’s foul start to earn the Funny Car title and Andrew Hines and Mike Castellana also visited victory lane in Pro Stock Motorcycle and Pro Modified, respectively. Big Dawgs: The $60,000, Winner Take All Automatic Pro Mod showdown at the Carolina Dragway commenced over the weekend with a stout field of race cars, as was expected. Danny Blankenship qualified atop the field with a stout 3.87 and was the class of the field for much of the weekend, but with the cash on the line, it was NMCA Pro Street champ Chris Rini who maintained solid performances each round and parlayed it into a final round birth with Doug Reisterer, where his 3.91 edged out Doug’s 3.94 for the big check.
NHRA Division 3: The North Central Division kicked off its 2011 schedule this weekend at a soggy Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, and despite battling showers and a late start on Sunday, were able to complete all but two of the scheduled final rounds, those being Top Alcohol Funny Car and Pro Stock Snowmobile. In Top Alcohol Dragster, Marty Thacker was the benefactor of the always tough Bill Reichert’s foul start in the final, while David Billingsley did likewise in the Competition Eliminator final on Charlie Greco’s red light. Mike Coughlin used a stellar .001 bulb in the Top Sportsman final to seal the deal alongside Billy Thoman, and Jason Kenny put together an impressive .011 package in the Super Comp final to best Brian Shockley. Full event results are available at Drag Race Central.
NHRA Division 6: Mike Henderson took Top Dragster honors with a final round defeat of Garth Giroux as the NHRA’s Northwest Division converged on the Firebird Raceway in Idaho, part of the annual NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor Opener. Jake Neibauer won Top Sportsman when opponent John Whitmore got out of the groove and slowed, and Rob Harrison drove his J/A to the Competition Eliminator win over a broken Alan Ellis. Full event results are available at Drag Race Central.
IHRA Division 2: Steve Dweck won Top Dragster on Saturday’s first day of racing at the Palm Beach Int’l Raceway, while Scott Davis won a tight Top Sportsman finale over Norm Williams. On Sunday, Jeremy Preston came out on top of a great Stock Eliminator final with Merrill Schrimscher, and Steve Muller barely edged out Tim Nimmo for the Quick Rod hardware. For the full weekend skinny, check out Drag Race Central.
IHRA Division 9: Several hours north at North Carolina’s Piedmont Dragway, Cameron Manuel was busy capturing the Top Dragster hardware while disposing of Jack Trussel in the final, while Al Burkett was the victor in Top Sportman on Tyrone Graham’s red bulb.
