March Meet: Same day coverage from Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield. Rain showers wreaked havoc on the 2013 edition of the fabled March Meet at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif., washing out Friday’s qualifying and ultimately forcing a Monday completion for many of the drag racing categories. However, neither rain nor a stout field of Nostalgia Top Fuelers could slow down defending winner Jim Young in the “Crop Duster” entry, as he marched to his second straight March Meet crown from the No. 1 qualifying spot, downing Denver Schutz on both ends of the race track in the final, 5.65 to 5.70. Tim Boychuk was also crowned champion on Sunday evening, outlasting a strong field of 34 Nostalgia Funny Cars to earn the title. Boychuk defeated Mark Sanders, who slowed, in the final round. The remainder of the heads-up and index categories had only completed two to three rounds of eliminations by Sunday evening, spilling the completion of the event over into Monday. NMRA: Same day coverage from Bradenton. Phil Hines became the first winner of the new Street Outlaw category at the Spring Break Shoototut held at the Bradenton Motorsports Park as he defeated reigning series champion John Urist in the final with a stellar 7.30 to the 7.47 posted by “The Fireball”. Joe Marini kicked off the sophomore campaign for the fledgling Coyote Stock category with a victory as he eeked out a come-from behind 10.63 win over Shane Stymiest and his 10.66 effort. Matt Amrine was the victor in Factory Stock, defeating reigning champ Louis Sylvester in the final, 10.87 to 10.95, and Brian Mitchell scored another event title in Renegade with a decisive 8.54 to 8.97 win over A.J. Wyce.
ADRL: Under the guidance of original founder Kenny Nowling, the new-look American Drag Racing League launched its 2013 tour at the popular Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina over the weekend in front of a full house of winter-logged doorslammer racing fanatics. Joey Martin, driving his crowd favorite ’55 Chevy Nomad, charged to the Pro Extreme title with a 3.67-second defeat of reigning series champion Mick Snyder. In Pro Nitrous, former small tire standout and grudge racer Steve Jackson, driving the very same Al-Anabi Racing entry that he piloted in Qatar over the winter, drove from the No.1 qualifying spot to victory lane in his very first ADRL race, defeating teammate Mike Castellana in the final round. Swedish racer Adam Flamholc added some international flavor to the winners podium with his decisive victory in Pro Modified, as he qualified No. 1 and defeated Raymond Matos in the final. John DeFlorian, Eric McKinney, Robert Jones, Barry Brown (the first-ever ADRL Top Dragster winner), Noah Strickland, and Caleb Russell were also winners at The Rock.
