MCINTIRE, ROJAS, MONTECALVO TAKE IHRA SOUTHERN NATIONALS

Mike McIntire Jr. broke both ends of the IHRA Nitro Funny Car records on his way to victory at the IHRA’s Nitro Jam Southern Nationals in Bradenton, Florida on Saturday. He was joined by Isaias Rojas (Pro Mod), John Montecalvo (Pro Stock) and other professional category winners

r1Mike McIntire Jr. set both ends of the Nitro Funny Car record book on his way to victory at the IHRA’s Southern Nationals at the Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida, as he defeated Tim Boychuck with an impressive 5.66 at 260 mph. Isaiah Rojas collected the hardware in the very first Pro Modified event since the return of the class created by the IHRA, as he downed Jimmy Keen with a 6.02 in the final round. And longtime Mountain Motor Pro Stock racer John Montecalvo was also victorious, as he ousted Trevor Eman with a 6.31 in the money round.

NHRA Division 4

r2Michael Manners earned his first victory of the season in Top Alcohol Dragster Sunday at the Texas Motorplex, as he downed James Thompson in the final round with a 5.58 at the NHRA Lucas Oil Central region opener. He was joined in victory lane by Wyoming native Kris Hool, who ousted Jonnie Lindberg in the Top Alcohol Funny Car finale, 5.67 to 5.73, along with Don Thomas, who drove around a slowing Craig Bourgeois to win Competition Eliminator.

NHRA Division 7

r2Reigning world champion Chris Demke worked his way though the Top Alcohol Dragster field at the NHRA Lucas Oil Pacific Regional and Divisional event at The Strip as Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday to claim his second victory of the season. Demke wasn’t the class of the field performance-wise on race day, but had just enough each round, eventually downing Megan McKernan in the final, 5.41 to 5.54. In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Annie Whiteley, fresh off a national event win just a week ago in Las Vegas, ousted an off-pace Terry Ruckman in the final, 5.66 to a 7.18.

Door Wars

r3One of springs hottest standalone events, Door Wars held at the Maryland International Raceway, brought down the house over the weekend with stout fields and record-setting numbers in every category. In Pro Mod, Kevin McCurdy downed teammate Tyler Hard in a blower versus nitrous matchup, with the blower car taking the win at 5.97-seconds. In Outlaw 10.5, Mike Decker Jr. unloaded a national record 3.98 in qualifying to pace the field and worked his way through eliminations before meeting Dale Collins in the final — a race he took by a 4.03 to 4.12 count. Ziff Hudson took Outlaw Drag Radial honors, while in X275, Ron Rhodes led the field with a stout 4.47 and ultimately took home the hardware with a 4.49-second defeat of Dean Marinis in the finale.

IHRA Pro-Am

r4John Taylor strapped a .006 light on Bill Powell in the Top Sportsman final in the sportsman portion at the IHRA Southern Nationals on Sunday, and his 4.92 on a 4.88 dial was enough to fend off Powells’ closer 4.84 on his 4.83 dial for the win. In Top Dragster, Tim Butler won an incredibly tight final round matchup with Claude Debonis that was decided by .001-seconds at the tree, as an .015 to .016 edge was the difference as both drivers ran over the dial by an equal amount, to the thousandth.
