SCRUGGS, SMITH, DISOMMA TAKE PDRA VICTORIES IN MARYLAND

Jason Scruggs notched his third Pro Extreme victory of the season to headline the winners list at the PDRA North-South Shootout in Maryland on Saturday evening that also included Rickie Smith (Pro Nitrous) and Anthony DiSomma (Pro Boost).

PDRA superstar Jason Scruggs powered to his third Pro Extreme victory of the 2015 season on Saturday in the series’ first visit to the Maryland International Raceway, parlaying his No. 1 qualifying effort into a win over a Badir Ahli in the final, 3.53 to 3.56. In Pro Nitrous, reigning NHRA champion Rickie Smith downed a stout field of runners, ultimately taking a big holeshot victory in the finale over Jason Harris, 3.80 to a quicker 3.77.  Like Scruggs, Anthony DiSomma claimed the Pro Boost hardware from the No. 1 spot, edging Paolo Giust in the final, 3.84 to 3.87, while Chris Garner-Jones used a stellar 4.03 in the final of Pro Extreme Motorcycle to motor away from Eric McKinney.

IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals

Jason Rupert was first out of the gate in the Nitro Funny Car finale at the IHRA Nitro Jam Rocky Mountain Nationals in Alberta, Canada on Sunday and never looked back, fending off a quicker Mike McIntire Jr. for the win. 5.70 to a 5.69. In Nitro Harley, Kevin Boyer defeated Craig Pelrine in the final round, 6.60 to 6.69, and Glen Kerunsky took Pro Modified honors over Ron Hogenson, 6.18 to 6.27.

NHRA Division 1

Duane Shields drove from the N0.1 qualifying spot to the winners circle in Top Alcohol Dragster at the New England Dragway Northeast Division Lucas Oil Series meet over the weekend, running 5.34 in the final to oust a slowing Rich McPhillips. Dan Pomponio took Top Alcohol Funny Car honors on a holeshot over Matt Gill, 5.69 to 5.66, and Peter Luciano strapped a holeshot edge on Joseph Santangelo and never looked back to claim the Competition Eliminator Wally.

Despite a stellar .006 reaction time by Kevin Self, Craig Bourgeois charged to victory in Competition Eliminator at the No Problem Raceway Park in Louisiana with a farther-under-the-index 6.98 to claim the victory. In Top Dragster, Brandon Chauvin overcame a better light by Pete Vicari to earn a 6.48-second victory, while Jimmy Lewis claimed the Top Sportsman title after opponent Jim Thorp slowed early.

The NHRA’s Northwest Division Lucas Oil Series paid a visit to the Woodburn Dragstrip in Oregon over the weekend, where Joey Severance powered to victory in Top Alcohol Dragster from the No. 1 qualifying spot, running 5.36 in the final for the win over Shawn Cowie. Annie Whiteley did likewise in Top Alcohol Funny Car, parlaying the top spot in qualifying into a 5.69 to 5.76 defeat of Jirka Kaplan in the final round.
