Shakedown at E’Town: Same Day Coverage on DRAGZINE. In a Pro Mod Blown field that was nearly split down the middle between blown and turbo cars, it was the hairdryers that won out as Jose Gonzalez parlayed an impressive qualifying performance into a win on Sunday at perhaps the best Shakedown yet at Raceway Park in Englishtown. In Pro Mod Nitrous, Mike Castellana had to fend off some tough challengers, bug it was all Al-Anabi Racing in the finale as the veteran ousted Fredy Scriba. Likewise, Larry Wood survived an onslaught of whos-who racers in the Outlaw 10.5 category for a huge win, while Steve Jackson used some crushing performances and a little lady luck in the semifinals to take the Drag Radial crown. And in X275′s first appearance at Shakedown, it was Rich Bruder – who reset the national record twice – driving to victory lane in a dominating performance.
NMCA: Same Day NMCA Coverage on StreetlLegalTV and LSX Shootout Same Day Coverage on LSXTV. During a weekend where the five-second barrier in NMCA Pro Street was finally busted, Joe Dunne cemented his championship season with a win, downing Joliet champ Randy Adler in the final round. Mike Murillo and Jim Jarrett, both newly-crowned champs in Super Street and Nostalgia Pro Street, did likewise, capturing victories to close out the season. In Xtreme Street, Bob Kurgan uncorked a 7.72 in qualifying but fell in the opening round as Enzo Pecchini cruised to victory over Phil Smith in the money round. In a huge Mean Street field helped by the addition of extra prie money by Don Baskin, NMRA champ Brandon Alsept took home the hardware and the cash as he downed Gary Duncan in the final.
NHRA: The sportsman portion of the Auto Plus NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway, which was postponed a week due to saturated grounds from recent heavy rains, was completed over the weekend. with racers in Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, and Super Gas returning to Reading for the Friday and Saturday event. In Super Stock, Joe Santangelo downed the all-conquering Peter Biondo in the final round with a better reaction time that forced the veteran under the dial. Biondo got his revenge in the Super Gas final, however, downing Dale Koncen with a stellar .016 light and 9.911. Super Comp delivered the tightest finale of the weekend as Bryan Balducci edged Division 1 hitter Dan Northrop by a scant .0017 seconds at the stripe for the victory.
