The first Classic Instruments/Great Lakes Stock/Super Stock Association race weekend was a split – with racers taking one and Mother Nature one. Despite the forecast for two days of rain, 49 racers turned out with many there on Friday for test and tune. Mother Nature somehow didn’t know it’s not supposed to rain at the race track on weekends and she soaked the track on Saturday morning. But by noon she cheered up and at 3:00 we were on the track. With just one qualifying round the racers were paired on a ladder and first round was run at just after 5:00. The semi-finals came down to a pair of veterans and a pair of Mopars. “The Master” Ben Wenzel was off the pace in his C/S ’67 Camaro and that let Doug Wright in his Nostalgia Super Stock ’64 Plymouth catch him early to take the win. Gerry Kassin in his Super Stock Hemi Dart killed the tree to run down Dan Olding in his GT/OA Monte Carlo to take a double breakout win. By 9:30 with the humidity and dew starting to appear on the track, Doug and Gerry agreed to split the winnings.

Although Sunday started dry, all of the weather apps showed a large band of rain approaching from the west that would last all afternoon. With that, the racers, CI/GLSSA officials and the track agreed to call the race – and the weather scored the win. With the racing canceled, it was agreed that the awards and prizes from the race would be moved to a special drawing at the July 21 race at Mid-Michigan Motorplex.

The racers were especially appreciative of the support from the US 131 Motorsports Park staff that got the Saturday racing nearly done. And more importantly, the racers had fun and the racing was tight.
