Video: Recap Of A Crazy First Day At Rocky Mountain Race Week 2018

Rocky Mountain Race Week (RMRW) kicked off Sunday at Great Bend Raceway in Great Bend, Kansas with its biggest turnout since it began in 2015. The start of this year’s event was one for the record books with plenty of fast passes, some close calls, and a wild ride for Carlos Astor, all packed into one day.

The organizer of RMRW, Matt Frost, wanted to create an event that allows those closer to the West Coast an opportunity to participate in an event like Drag Week. Taking a similar formula to Drag Week, Frost toned down the pace of RMRW to allow those participating to enjoy the event more and treat it like a vacation. The timing of the event is set in the summer so a family can hit the road if they want and bring the kids along for the adventure.

There were plenty of single-digit passes from a few different cars and some early carnage early that made the first day interesting. Everything from head gaskets exploding at the top end, to a diesel-powered truck throwing driveline parts all over the Great Bend Raceway surface. The 2018 edition of RWMW has also provided an amazing variety of cars and trucks with every power-adder imaginable represented at some level.

Carlos Astor’s RMRW was cut short after he went for one of the craziest rides we’ve ever seen. His wagon got out of the groove and made a hard left towards the opposite wall where it connected with some serious force. The near head-on angle and the vicious impact threw the wagon over the wall like a car-jump right out of the Dukes of Hazzard, where it landed close to 100-feet down the track and then burst into flames. Thankfully, a very shaken up Astor was able to escape from the car via the passenger side door with no serious injuries.

You have to watch all the great footage from day one of that the team at 1320Video was able to capture!
