PRI 2012: Hughes Performance’s New Extreme TH400 Transmissions

Having massive amounts of horsepower comes at a price. All that horsepower has to have a transmission that can not only take it without causing a catastrophe in the drivetrain, but also can transfer all that power to the ground with minimal horsepower loss. Race teams will spend countless hours trying to reduce the amount of horsepower loss without sacrificing durability. Also fighting the battle are the folks at Hughes Performance.

At PRI 2012, Hughes Performance debuted their brand new extreme version of their popular TH400 transmissions. “we came out with our lock up powerglide a couple of years ago, and now we’ve adapted the technology to our 400.” explained Pete Nichols of Hughes Performance. ” It has a much bigger input shaft and is designed for extreme horsepower use like 3,000 plus.”

Nichols explained to us that while this transmission is designed for heads-up Pro-mods, outlaw radials, and outlaw 10.5 style classes, it would absolutely work in lower horsepower drag applications that were looking for a durable lock-up transmission.

Features:

  • 1.250 diameter 29 spline input shaft, uses same lock-up torque converter as XP5 Powerglide.
  • Custom Front Pump with billet aluminum pump body.
  • Billet steel bolt-in stator support.
  • Billet steel forward drum.
  • Billet steel forward clutch hub.
  • Pro Mod 36-element intermediate sprag.
  • Billet steel intermediate shaft.
  • Cast iron direct drum, optional billet steel direct drum available.
  • Pro Series fluid release transbrake valve body with reverse shift pattern.
  • 2 speed option available with forward shift pattern.

Nichols also showed us how Hughes have updated their converter design with a new billet aluminum cover that takes weight out of the torque converter.

The new bolt-on torque converter features a Billet aluminum cover that reduces the entire weight of the converter
