PRI 2016: Learning The Cooling Basics With Derale Performance

The folks at Derale Performance out of Los Angeles, California, have had the privilege of providing enthusiasts like us race-spec cooling solutions for more than six decades since its parent company’s conception, back in the late ’60s. In fact, Derale even sources and manufacturers everything here in the great old U.S.A., and we had the opportunity at this year’s PRI show out of Indianapolis, Indiana, to learn what’s new with the company.PRI Show 2016 668

“The scoop cooler itself is a stack-plate cooler with an integrated scoop,” Mike Murphy, Director of Sales for Derale Performance told us. “This component is intended to be mounted on a frame rail. Typically, this style of core used to be mounted on the frame rail using a tube-and-fin style of core–which is still very efficient, because it uses a lot of natural airflow.”

“When it comes to our dual-core unit, you really want to mount this under a vehicle,” Murphy said. “A lot of times, you don’t want to start stack coolers in front of your radiator–as that will cause some overheating issues with coolant,” he continued. Mike said a small, compact area will work extremely well, as this unit has its own dual fan shroud, allowing the unit to make its own airflow.

Murphy continued by explaining how stack-plate style of coolers are still the most efficient today. Because Derale's stack-plate cooler is integrated with a scoop that forces fresh air into the cooler, Murphy said, "It's the most efficient style of cooler you can have on a racecar,"
