Brittany Force marched to the quickest wheel-driven elapsed time in NHRA history on Saturday afternoon at the Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pennsylvania with an incredible 3.623-second pass at 332.92 mph from her David Grubnic-tuned Advance Auto Parts Top Fuel dragster.
Force qualified number one at Indianapolis two weeks ago with a 3.645 (just .001-seconds from her career best) and carried that momentum into the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals, leading qualifying after Friday’s opening two sessions with a 3.651. A 3.669 in the warmer third session gave Grubnic all the confidence he needed to pounce on the record books in the fourth and final qualifier.
Force was an impressive .816-seconds to 60-feet, 2.056 to 330-feet, and 2.902 at 299.26 mph to the 1/8-mile on her way to the 3.623.
“I thought where we stood Friday night was going to be pretty good and if we could match that I’d be pretty happy,” Force said. “What we just did right there, that was unbelievable.
“That run was just outstanding. It felt fast. It was smooth, it was clean. It felt like it stayed straight in the groove and I was just hanging on,” Force continued. “The end of the track came a lot quicker so I knew we were on a good run and they didn’t tell me the numbers until I got down on the top end so it felt good. I knew before I even got in the car. In the staging lanes Grubnic jumped in our Chevy Suburban tow vehicle and had a conversation with me and Skylar Blades on my team about what the plan was, what we were going to do and how we were going to set a record. He told me to hang on and to get the car down there, and we’d be pretty surprised on the other end. And I was. I did not think a .62. I didn’t ask him for a number but he said if we get down there it would be an awesome run and we’d set some records so it felt good to do that.”
Force’s run eclipsed the previous Top Fuel national record of 3.628, which was also set by a David Grubnic-tuned car, that of Clay Millican, at the Winternationals a season ago.
