PRI 2015: Going Full Throttle With Weld Wheel’s New Front Runner

We would be willing to bet that there is not one auto enthusiast that has not heard of Weld wheels. They have been building aluminum wheels in the U.S. since 1967, and if you go to any car show, cruise night, or drag race, we guarantee that you will see more than one car with Weld wheels under it. This last November, Weld Wheels unveiled a new spindle mount front wheel called the Full Throttle Drag Front Runner. This month, Weld followed that up with the introduction of a lug-mounted version of that wheel.

One size fits everybody, as the wheel is available in a lug or spindle-mount style.

According to Phillip Vanbuskirk, “This wheel is as light or lighter than the offerings we have now.” In fact, Vanbuskirk told us about the display wheel, “The wheel that is on display is as light as the Alumastar wheel, but is still undergoing weight reduction testing with the engineers. We’re hoping to keep it at around 7 pounds.”

Weld does not plan to make a matching rear, because they currently have the V-series wheel that looks like an almost perfect match.

Both the spindle mount and the lug mount are a fully-forged one-piece design that will be offered in a 15×3.5 inches in both lug and spindle mount, as well as a 17×4.5 in the lug mount. If you are concerned about a rear wheel so that you can make a set, according to Vanbuskirk, “We did make a rear-wheel center to match it, but it is so similar to our V-series that we offer now, that we decided that it wasn’t feasible to have two centers that look exactly the same.”

If you’re curious about wheel strength, c’mon, it’s a Weld wheel! The wheel is currently undergoing SFI testing, and should be available by the beginning of 2016. In fact, it is so strong, there is a possibility that it could see duty on Top-Fuel cars.

The way a wheel looks is just as important to most people as how well it performs, and when we asked Vanbuskirk about wheel finishes, he told us, “Both the spindle and lug-mount wheels will be available in either polished or black with machined accents.”
